Work Life Balance
Work Life Balance
Work life balance?
What does this mean to you? Do you even think about it?
I was blessed by my team a few years ago when they gave my wife and me a weekend at Hotel Hershey Spa and Resort.
Before I left, I updated my voicemail and computer messages. I said “I am out of the office focusing on what matters most. I am spending the weekend away with my wife and AM UNAVILABLE’. If it is urgent please call my mother on 717-765-4321 as she knows how to reach me. If its business, please call my partner Jack on 717-123-4567. Thank you for understanding”.
What was amazing was the positivity of the responses I received. Everyone thought that this was a great idea, but I believe few of us do this, but absolutely should.
Ask yourself; would you do the same? Money is important, but life matters more.
Work life balance means exactly what it says... balancing work but maintaining focus on time and absolutes. Absolutes being family, friends and loved ones. Time being the one commodity that is limited and can’t be replenished when it’s up.
I remember the expression that life is like a checking account and if you withdraw more than you deposit you go bankrupt. And the quote “if you forget about them, they will forget about you”. This is everyone, including clients. Are you moving on to the next sale or building relationships with the people that hire you to serve them.
The most important part of selling real estate, money, title insurance etc. is to nurture and build longstanding relationships and in doing so life and business balance is created with respect, referrals and friends.
As I am getting a bit longer in the tooth, I do have regrets as I believe we all do. I regret some of the things I passed on because I was too busy. I regret putting business ahead of absolutes at times. I regret tolerating things and people that I shouldn’t have.
As time moves on the decision about your life is yours and is another “deal” more important than friends, life, love and family. Will you look back at life and say “I wish I worked more” which I doubt, or will you look back for relationships that weren’t nurtured, memories that weren’t made, trips that you did not take, friends you haven’t seen in years and family that took a back seat to business. You can always make more money, but you can’t take back life that was lost but you can impact the future.
In conclusion, do something about this and think long and hard about the decisions you make, the focus of your life, and your priorities and absolutes.
